The Crown and Pearl:
Nightlife / Club / Entertainment: Crown and Pearl
The landscaping of the Crown and Pearl is constantly changing. This modern contemporary venue owned by Bailey Longcloth and Prad Prathivi is located on a private tropical island…but is not constrained by that location in its plantings. Constantly changing due to the seasons and what kind of events are being held there, the landscaping must be flexible to various uses. Currently in winter mode, the Crown is currently surrounded by lush plantings of snow covered pines, and lit trees. From above, it looks like a building planted ina forest, but from the ground, the visitor and club patron feel enticed to wander through paths to discover ‘rooms’ within the island.

Southsea Point:
Private Residence, Matanzas
Southsea point is a private residence designed by Prad Prathivi. Located on a tropical sim, the landscaping was required to fit within certain guidelines to maintain the integrity of the environment. Landscaped to suggest permanence, large boulders and mature palms as well as tropical plants and flowers enhance the architecture. Surprises, such as a rooftop garden and pond, as well as a landscaped and hidden deck allow for pleasant exploration and relaxation.

Orion’s Belt:
Private Residence, Cayo Coco
This Ultra Modern glass and Concrete structure, designed by Prad Prathivi and Rrishanna Regina, is located on a tropical island. The landscaping follows the tropical theme with lush plantings of palms, ferns, lilies and grasses. The structure and land plot is very expansive, because of this, water was used to unify the various areas of the property. Large boulders anchor the plantings on the expansive private beach, which lead up some concrete stairs to a large swimming pool, which is surrounded by a zen-garden inspired patio of small rocks and large stepping stones. Plantings on one side of this pool serve not only to screen the pool and property from the neighbors, but the plantings “flow” through the glass windows into the interior of the home, connecting the interior and exterior spaces. As you exit the home on the other side, a waterfall flows off of the roof into another pool with a decidely more formal feel. Mainting the playfulness of the home and environment, large concrete stepping pads were placed in a zig zag pattern across one end of the pool leading to a bar. Along this patio, planter boxes contain some of the same plants used in other areas of the home, again, providing the visitor with a sense that the house and enviroment are one continuous space.

Vain Inc. White Square:
Commercial, Joomos
A very contemporary mall space designed by Prad Prathivi, this project did not call for a large amount of plants. However, not including any plants at all would have left the mall feeling cold and and unwelcoming. To accentuate the curving horizontal lines of the build, I utilized vertical Lombardy poplars located in large containers in the harbor. To soften some of the hard edges, small planters were located at the base of several of the large concrete supports. In addition to the exterior plantings, small fountains and planters were located inside of the structures to delineate different mall spaces and provide the welcome sound of water and some greenery while maintaining a consitent look throughout. While the use of plants was minimal, landscaping at White Square also included creating visual interest through the use of concrete pads placed in the harbor in an organic pattern to mimic lily-pads.

No Longer in World
Second Life 5th Birthday Celebration
Mainstage and Welcome Area:
I was honored to be allowed to provide plantings in the Second Life 5th Birthday celebrations. Part of the project included a formal water feature in the middle of a ‘boulevard’. I used a repetitive planting next to the water feature itself, using the same plants in each of the 4 planting beds, in the exact same order in the beds. Along the sides of the boulevard, I used a more informal planting arrangment, introducing boulders to provide structure and utilizing taller trees and bushes to provide a screen that delineates the welcome areas from main display spaces, while also providing intriguing glimpses of the exhibits.
SL5B Stage 2
With this project, I wanted to maintain the clean lines and uncluttered appearance of the architecture while providing the warmth that plants and nature bring. Birch trees, with their white bark, provided visual interest while mirroring the white concrete of the stage. Buckthorn bushes and buffalo grass gave the exterior of the stage a slightly overgrown look and emphasized the organic shape of the stage itself. Inside the stage surround, simple planters containing ferns softend the harshness of the concrete.
Homestyle Consolidated
Professional Offices: Angel Square
This project was for the offices of Homestyle Consolidated, a Second Life group for housing and furniture designers to advertise their wares to people, much in the way that Fashion Consolidated works for clothing. The main building was a home, on a standard home size plot, and required simple landscaping in the theme of the sim which was tropical beach.
Bailey’s Reach
Private Residential Open Sim
Bailey Longcloth gave me the opportunity to cover her entire sim with lush plantings with no constrictions except for prim limit. The main challenge was how to cohesively cover the sim with plants, while providing interest and encouraging exploration. A technique used in RL is to creat rooms and visual interest by staggering plantings and creating pathways that encourage people to continue just a little more to see ‘what’s around the bend.’ I tried to do this by utilizing hardscaping, terraforming and other tricks of the trade. This project included hidden waterfalls, tropical jungles, beaches, bamboo forests, mountains, creeks and temperate deciduous forests.
Amodica Main Store
Commercial, Southsea
Again, working with architect Prad Prathivi, this project was to augment the mainstore for our furniture, prefab and housewares store. One main feature that I am especially proud of was a custom fountain and surrounding planters. Designed as a courtyard focal point, the fountain consisted of 5 varying height pillars with trickling water down the sides. Surrounding the fountain, a circular planter bed divided into segments filled with wildflowers enhanced the playful nature of the courtyard while not detracting from the architecture of the building.
